The name ‘Faith like Potatoes’ originates from a man of God by the name of Peter Marshall. He was a young Scotsman who went across to the USA and eventually became the personal Chaplain to the President of the United States of America. He was also a great teacher of God’s Word. One day when lecturing to his students he said, “You must have faith that is tangible, faith that you can touch, faith like potatoes.” I have adopted that saying and eventually wrote my life story with the title of the book ‘Faith like Potatoes,’ which is now in 17 different languages around the world. The movie is also still very popular, especially in the United States of America.
Faith comes not through blessings, but through trials and as the book and movie indicates. We have been through many trials here at Shalom farm; personal tragedies, droughts, fires, economic recession, political unrest, disease, etc. That’s where I went to theological college – namely the “school of life,” but God never allows us to be tempted above that which we are able to handle, and He has always made a way for us through every challenge we have ever encountered. I would encourage the readers never to give up. The Bible says in Luke 9:62 (NKJV), “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” You cannot plough a straight line if you keep looking back, we need to move forward.
God laid it on our hearts many years ago to invest in a huge 20 ton yellow coloured Mercedes-Benz truck with a platform folding down from the side, a lighting and a sound system. We drove from the tip of Cape Town right up to the very Northern part of Uganda, preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It was incredible! Tens of thousands of people heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ who maybe would never have heard it otherwise, because this truck was a 4×4, built especially in Germany and could go where very few other vehicles could go. Then in 2003 the Lord gave me a mandate and that was the birth of the “Mighty Men” phenomenon. God called me to mentor young men, who needs to stand up and be counted; to be the Prophet, Priest, and King in their own homes. I thought initially God would allow me to mentor maybe 5 or 10 men, but as is well known now throughout the whole world, tens of thousands of men have come to Christ and have learned to be good fathers, good husbands, good sons and good citizens for Jesus Christ. It is still going like wildfire. This very year there will be new Mighty Men Conferences starting in Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. They are taking place all over the world.
I think our ministry is now mainly going into the area of media. We are now doing approximately ten television shows per week (that is 40 a month) and we’re on many different television channels. We also have a large following on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We have our own APP (simply type in Uncle Angus) and you will receive a free APP, and every day you’ll get the Word of God.
We are also writing books. I have written just over 40 books up-to-date. We are also doing radio shows and columns for secular magazines, like Farmers Weekly, Landbou Weekblad, Vision, Gateway etc. Not to mention preaching in Stadiums, sports fields, and all over the world. The latest one was the huge prayer meeting that took place on the 22 April 2017 just outside Bloemfontein, where we saw over a million-people come together to pray for our beloved South Africa.
For those who have a heart for evangelism, to see souls saved, people healed, and people set free; my counsel would be start at the beginning, be patient, don’t run ahead of God, don’t be disappointed in small beginnings. The ministry I have just told you about, has taken me very close to 40 years to get to this point. So, this is not a ministry for the fly by nights, you are either called into this ministry or you will never make it. God must be your soul, passion, provider and managing director. If you, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)
